(Chemical symbol: Sn). A silvery-white, malleable and somewhat ductile metal with a low melting point. It is a crystalline structure. It takes a high polish and is used to coat other metals to prevent corrosion, since it does not corrode easily in air. Tin, when added to steel, slightly increases hardness but reduces impact strength. Atomic weight, 118.7; melting point, 231oC (448°F);specific gravity, 5.85.
