The Sandberg process is an application of the oxy-acetylene flame to harden rails. In this process, rails already in service are heated with the torch, then quenched with water. In one experiment, rails treated by this process remained unaffected after 360 000 cars had passed over them, although adjoining lengths of untreated rails corrugated when subjected to the same test.
