Shrinkage refers to a reduction in any of the dimensions of a material caused by contraction during cooling as the result of the material’s coefficient of thermal expansion (or contraction), or a reduction in specific volume as the result of a change to a more dense phase on cooling (eg, solid formed from liquid).
