OVERSTRESSING

OVERSTRESSING

A part is said to be over-stressed when an operating stress exceeds the limits of the metal and permanent deformation occurs. The effects of overstressing usually accompany plastic deformation. When occurring locally, such over-stressed parts may be the source of a fatigue crack if the operating stresses are of a repeated or fluctuating nature. Overstressing may be of a local or general nature.
