The heat given off during the freezing (cooling and solidification) of a metal or alloy, or absorbed during the melting; sometimes called the heat of solidification. It is expressed in calories per gram. In the case of alloys, the processes of melting and freezing are complex and usually occur over a range of temperatures rather than at a single temperature.
